SENATORS’ ZINICOLA LOOKS TO CLOSE OUT GAMES AND OVER-THE-TOP EXPECTATIONS Nationals’ 2006 Minor League Pitcher of the Year Still Progressing Toward a Major-League Future 08/27/2007 When he was chosen by the Washington Nationals in the sixth round of the First-Year Player Draft in June 2006, Senators reliever Zechry Zinicola could not have had any idea of the summer-long whirlwind that awaited him. After quickly signing his entry-level contract with the Nationals, he reported to Class-A Vermont with little fanfare to begin his professional baseball career. But by Labor Day, Zinicola had turned in dominant pitching performances at three different minor-league levels, earning him recognition as the Nationals’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year and jump-starting widespread speculation that he might even find himself pitching in the major leagues this year.
